Introducing Drift Grid
Drift Grid is now available as a browser-based phasing and loop-drift instrument from EventFieldAudio.
Load between two and four audio loops and allow them to move against one another in tempo, length or playback position. Each loop can follow its own drift behaviour, gradually diverging from the others, returning towards a shared pulse, orbiting around a central relationship or snapping back into alignment with the beat.
The app is designed for composing with relationships that continue to change over time. Small differences between the loops create shifting accents, composite rhythms and unexpected alignments that would be difficult to plan on a conventional timeline. Visual phase tracking shows how the loops are moving in relation to one another, while adjustable boundaries determine how far each part is allowed to drift.
Drift Grid also includes stochastic variation, effects, long fades and automatic capture of interesting alignments. When the system reaches a relationship worth keeping, it can be captured and rendered rather than disappearing as the loops continue to move.
The resulting performance can be exported as a WAV file for use in a DAW, allowing Drift Grid to function as both an experimental instrument and a practical source of compositional material.
All audio processing takes place locally on your device: your source files are not uploaded to our servers.
Drift Grid is currently available as a beta release and works best in a current desktop version of Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
